Art Newbie? Here’s How To Build Your Personal Collection

A personal art collection is similar to your own portal of joy. To beginners, the art world can seem overwhelming and confusing. Given the sheer variety of artists, types of art styles and a rapidly growing market of art online, building a personal art collection can seem daunting at first. What if we tell you these very factors can be in your favour? We have a few handy tips to help you get started, and start your journey as an art collector!

Don’t Rush it
Finding art that resonates with you is a lot like a relationship – it takes time to find something worth committing to. Do not feel pressured to make a purchase at the first show or gallery you walk into. Spend time experiencing it, explore the world of art to discover something that resonates with you and your sense of aesthetics.

Stay Informed
For new collectors, education is key. Make an effort to learn everything that catches your interest. Start small – visit local art galleries, read up about artists displayed, sign up for newsletters educating about artwork from India, attend gallery walk-throughs and sign up for art events in your city. When starting out, it may feel like everything is so disjointed but it will help you understand art better over time, ultimately helping you build an art collection you are proud of.

Don’t Chase Fame
When looking through options, pick artworks that really sing to your soul. Whether the artist is popular or not should be secondary. Sometimes when an artist gets popular, everybody wants to own their artwork, but it may not always resonate with your sense of style or design.

Look Beyond Investments

A lot of art enthusiasts only want to build their art collection as an investment. While good art can definitely serve as an investment, boxing it as just that would be a huge disservice to the piece. Art is meant to bring joy to your space and life, make sure you consider this lens as well when you start collecting art.

Mix It Up

As someone new to art, it is likely that a particular style or school of art is what pulled you in. While that can be a great starting point, don’t let it restrict you! Look beyond labels like traditional, contemporary, Indian abstract art, post-modern etc. Indulge your senses and varied interests, pick artwork based on what appeals to you most, the rest comes after!

Let Your Art Speak
If you have plans to display your art collection in your home, make sure you pair similar styles, colours or genres together. This way, you will be able to showcase the diversity of your art collection and your taste. In case your art collection does not have anything in common, simply frame them in a similar style for a cohesive look!

Trust Your Gut

Lastly, when selecting artwork for your collection, trust your instincts. Experiencing art is deeply personal and should be treated in a similar manner. There is no right or wrong kind of artwork – it all depends on what type or style appeals to you most at a particular moment. Have confidence in your choices and build a collection that you love.
