Asma Akber
A self-taught artist from Bangladesh, Asma has dabbled with art from an early age. Art is a form of catharsis for her, something to channel her emotions into. Her work is spontaneous; she adds and subtracts shapes and colours by interacting with her canvas. Exploring the symbiotic relationship between colors, textures and line has been a constant source of delight for Asma. Her heavily textured paintings are built layer upon layer with paint in the impasto tradition of impressionists like Van Gogh and Rembrandt and more recently Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. Asma oeuvre contains paintings inspired by nature as well as images replete with vast skies and human dwellings. She paints from her memories and reams, creating personal mindscapes.
Art has always held a special place in her heart. Asma is an avid collector of contemporary as well as Bangladeshi masters such as Kibria, Shabuddin and Murtaza Bashir. Living with these powerful paintings has been a great source of inspiration for her.
Asma has exhibited her work in both Bangladesh and India. Her recent exhibitions include Art for Impact - Dr. Reddy Foundation - Hyderabad, India Art Festival – New Delhi, Women in Leadership – WIL Fest - Shilpakala Academy – Dhaka and Women in Art – organized by DAWC – Edge Gallery- Dhaka.
