Mario Miranda
Mario Miranda
Born in 1926 and died in 2011, Mario de Miranda, was an Indian cartoonist and painter based in Loutolim in the Indian state of Goa. He began his career as a Cartoonist for the Times of India Group in 1953. He later moved into illustration and fine art. He has illustrated numerous books including Inside Goa by Manohar Malgonkar, A family in Goa and the Open Eyes by Dom Moraes. Among his own books are Goa with Love, A little world of Humor, Sketch book, Germany in Wintertime, Paris and Mario de Miranda. He has been invited to sketch and exhibit in many countries including U.S.A, Japan, Germany, Spain and France.
Though the artists' community did not consider Mario to be one of them, it did not affect his creative urges, which found expressions in colour, pen-and-ink and charcoal. His range of styles, and command over different mediums, made him a bit of an enigma. Ironically, it was the cartoonist/illustrator's tag that stuck, limiting people's appreciation to 'just a few laughs'.
Some believe, that though Mario gained huge popularity during his lifetime, his true genius is yet to be recognised.
