Born in 1990 in Hyderabad, Afza Tamkanat’s art engages with an array of socio-political issues. Daughter of one of Hyderabad’s better-known artists, Fawad Tamkanat, Afza picked up the brush at a very young age. As she watched her dad paint, Afza says she would also pick up crayons and sketches and paint on the walls and bed sheets.
Afza carries memories of Hyderabad with her wherever she goes. Those memories are recreated with watercolours and coffee on paper. The soft sepia reflections of her life have a strong spirit and essence of their own that cannot be missed. The sepia, ochre, grey and white palette instantly imbibes the spirit of an old photograph that becomes hazy with time and evokes a feeling of nostalgia and warmth.
